When I (29F at the time) started my yoga journey in January 2023, I weighed 200 lbs (91 kg). Today, I'm proud to say I've reached 145 lbs (66 kg), and I've never felt more connected to my body both physically and mentally. For reference, I'm 5'6" (168 cm), which puts my BMI at 23.4, well within the healthy range.

For the backstory:

I've struggled with my weight since college, where the freshman fifteen turned into the senior forty. The stress of classes, late-night study sessions, and emotional eating had taken their toll. I tried every quick fix imaginable – juice cleanses, crash diets, intense cardio programs – but nothing stuck. Each attempt left me feeling more defeated and disconnected from my body than before.

The turning point came after a particularly stressful period at work. My doctor suggested I try yoga to manage anxiety, and though skeptical, I decided to give it a shot. I found a small studio near my apartment that offered beginner-friendly classes. The instructor, Sarah, created such a welcoming environment that for the first time in years, I didn't feel judged for my size or lack of flexibility.

I started with two classes a week, focusing on gentle flow and yin yoga. What surprised me most was how yoga shifted my entire perspective on movement. Unlike my previous experiences with exercise, where I'd push myself to exhaustion trying to burn calories, yoga taught me to listen to my body and move with intention. The meditation aspects helped me address my emotional eating habits, and I began to understand that wellness wasn't just about the numbers on the scale.

As I became more comfortable with the practice, I gradually increased to four classes a week, adding more challenging vinyasa flows and power yoga sessions. The community at the studio became my support system, and I even made some close friends who shared similar goals.

Here are the key elements that made this journey successful:

- Developing mindful eating habits through yoga philosophy. The practice of mindfulness extended beyond the mat, helping me make conscious food choices without restrictive dieting. I started eating slowly, appreciating each bite, and naturally gravitated toward nourishing, whole foods.

- Creating a sustainable routine. Unlike my previous attempts at weight loss, I focused on building habits I could maintain long-term. I scheduled yoga classes like important meetings, making them non-negotiable parts of my day, but also remained flexible enough to adjust when life got busy.

- Embracing progress over perfection. Yoga taught me that every day on the mat is different, and that's okay. Some days I could hold crow pose, others I needed child's pose, and both were equally valuable. This mindset helped me navigate weight loss plateaus and occasional setbacks without giving up.

- Building strength from within. As my practice deepened, I discovered muscles I never knew I had. The first time I held plank pose for a full minute, I felt invincible. When I finally mastered my first headstand, I realized my body was capable of amazing things, regardless of its size.

- Finding joy in movement. Yoga showed me that exercise doesn't have to feel like punishment. I learned to celebrate what my body could do rather than criticizing what it couldn't. This positive relationship with movement became the foundation of sustainable weight loss.

What started as a doctor's recommendation for stress relief became a transformative journey of self-discovery. While the physical changes are significant, the mental and emotional growth has been even more profound. I've learned that true wellness comes from treating your body with kindness and respect, not from forcing it into submission.

Today, I'm a certified yoga instructor myself, specializing in classes for beginners and plus-size practitioners. My journey has come full circle, and nothing brings me more joy than helping others discover the transformative power of yoga, just as I did. The weight loss was a wonderful benefit, but the real victory was finding peace with my body and creating a lifestyle that nurtures both physical and mental health.
